RotoSteam
Assignment
For my bachelor’s end project, the assignment was to
design a cleaning device for Braun. The product had to
allign with Braun’s design language and assist users in their
cleaning tasks.
The Result
The final result is a floor-standing steam cleaner with an ergonomically designed handgrip developed using 3D scanning technology. To ensure efficient and effortless cleaning, the steam gun features a unique rotating mechanism, which serves as a key selling point. The RotoSteam also includes an iMode function, allowing users to switch between different rotation modes. Additionally, the steam cleaner is compact and equipped with convenient storage for attachments.
For user testing and presenting the concept to the client, I created a full-scale prototype, as shown below.
The Process
I created a full-scale replica of the product and integrated electronics to simulate the rotation mechanism. This process involved a range of techniques, including 3D printing, CNC cutting, spray painting, and 3D scanning. These methods allowed me to present the prototype to the client and conduct multiple user tests.
To design the handgrip, I had participants clean with a clay-covered brush, capturing a variety of natural gripping positions. Based on these results, I developed a universal handgrip. Additionally, I did a lot of research to existing steamcleaners and disassembled one to gain a deeper understanding of its internal components.
